SMART LIGHTING IN THE SMART CITY CONCEPT – MORE THAN PUBLIC LIGHTING

The emergence of the concept of smart cities brings many innovative solutions to urban environments, where smart lighting is the basis of these developments. Smart lighting systems are designed to optimize energy consumption, improve public safety, improve quality of life and support sustainable development.

Following positive world and EU practice, at the end of 2020, the Croatian Parliament passed Pravilnik o zonama rasvijetljenosti, dopuštenim vrijednostima rasvjetljavanja i načinima upravljanja rasvjetnim sustavima (NN br. 128/20). According to the aforementioned, the lighting project, as well as the implementation of the project solution, must be made so that the lamps are ready for inclusion in the advanced management system (Smart city).

Although for almost four years lamps are being prepared for inclusion in the “Smart city” through the implementation of modernization projects and new construction of public lighting, there are only a small number of smart solutions that are not only theoretical possibilities on paper, but actually implemented and applicable solutions.

As experts in the field of lighting with many years of experience, we believe that the main problem is the lack of a complete “in house” solution. Lighting manufacturers continue to focus on lamps, while the user interface (Web application), as well as most of the sensors, are for now the product of some third-party companies, and it turned out to be a problem in practice to unify all of the above. The problem is to find knowledge and technical solutions to unite all of it. Also a problem was the poor knowledge of the very concept of smart public lighting and the possibilities it offers, as well as the assumption that smart public lighting is still a kind of luxury and intended only for the largest urban centers.

TESLA d.o.o. has experience and technical knowledge of implementing smart lighting, so feel free to contact us with additional questions.

Smart lighting in the “smart city” concept, through the integration of various sensors (pedestrian/vehicle detection, fog and rain detection, air quality detection, ambient noise detection, temperature detection, etc.) offers a number of options, key of which are:

  • Improved public safety
  • Energy efficiency and cost savings
  • Positive impact on the environment
  • Improving urban life
  • Data collection and analytics
  • Modernized connectivity (5G network development, integration of electric vehicle charging stations, etc.

In conclusion, smart lighting is a key element in the development of smart cities, offering a wide range of benefits from energy efficiency and public safety to improved urban life and environmental sustainability.
